PU leather and coated finishes are not real leather and should not be treated like it. Leather conditioners, saddle soap and oils are designed to feed a material that absorbs; a coated surface does not absorb, so those products sit on top, go tacky, and attract dirt. The care routine for a PU bag is simpler than for leather — but the failure modes are different, and most of them are avoidable.
Cleaning
Wipe the surface with a soft cloth, very slightly damp with water, then let it air dry away from radiators, heaters and direct sunlight. That is the whole routine for ordinary marks.
What to keep away from it: solvents, acetone, alcohol wipes, bleach, saddle soap, leather conditioner, and the washing machine. Alcohol wipes in particular strip the coating's top layer, and the damage shows as a dull patch that will not buff out.
For a stubborn mark, a drop of mild dish soap in water on a cloth is as strong as you should go. Test it on the base of the bag first, where nobody looks.
Heat is the main enemy
Coated finishes soften and can lift or bubble when they get hot. The everyday risks are ordinary: a car parked in summer sun, a bag left against a radiator, a hot boot floor. None of these show damage immediately — the coating softens, picks up a texture from whatever it is pressed against, and the mark sets permanently as it cools.
Direct sunlight over months also fades colour, most visibly on the panel that faces out while the bag sits on a shelf.
Storage: the part most people get wrong
A PU bag stored empty and squashed under other bags develops creases across the front panel that do not come out. Coated finishes crack along a hard crease line eventually.
- Stuff it loosely with acid-free tissue or plain paper so it holds its shape. Loosely — overstuffing stretches the seams.
- Do not seal it in plastic. Trapped moisture is what produces the mildew smell people find when they unpack a bag after a year. A cotton dust bag or a pillowcase lets it breathe.
- Store it upright on a shelf rather than under a pile.
- Keep it off dark denim. Indigo transfers onto pale bags, and on a coated finish that dye sits in the surface texture and is very hard to remove. Light-coloured bags and raw denim are a bad combination.
Hardware wears — that is normal
Buckles, clasps, zip pulls and base feet are plated metal. Plating is a thin layer, and it thins wherever the bag rubs: against a belt buckle, a desk edge, keys in a pocket, the side of a car seat. Base feet go first because they take the bag's weight against the ground.
That thinning is normal wear over time, not a manufacturing fault, and it is not covered by a return after the 30-day window. What is a fault is a failure: a clasp that no longer holds, a zip that separates, a strap anchor that pulls loose. Tell us within 7 days of noticing it, with photos, and we will sort it out.
One practical note if you have a nickel sensitivity: nickel is the most common cause of contact allergy and is used widely across the industry in fasteners, buckles, studs and zip components. We do not test hardware composition and cannot supply supplier metal analysis, so factor that in before ordering.
Zips and straps
A zip that is stiff usually needs cleaning, not force. Run a soft brush along the teeth to clear lint, then work it slowly. Forcing a stiff zip is how teeth get pulled out of alignment.
For straps, the wear point is where the strap meets the hardware ring. If you carry a heavy laptop or a full water bottle daily in a bag built for lighter loads, that junction is where it will give. Match the bag to the load.
Colour on your screen versus in your hand
Worth saying plainly: colours on a phone, tablet or monitor depend on the screen, its brightness and colour settings, and the light in the room. The same product photo can look warmer on a phone than on a laptop. Some variation between screen and reality is expected rather than a defect — but if what arrives is clearly not the colour you ordered, that is our error and we treat it as such.
